Velma Welborn

Velma Tanner Welborn, born March 9, 1931, was welcomed by angels to her new home Monday, April 18. She was married to Earl Lee Tanner of Cleveland, Texas, who preceded her in death, and her late husband Ken Welborn of Rowlett, Texas. Velma was a devoted mother to Debbie (Scott) Cranmer; Angie (Philip) Andrews; and Rev. Tommy (Ruthie) Tanner. She was “Nannie” to Christi (Ray) Maher; David (Edie) Hairgrove; Joshua (Courtney) Hairgrove; Caleb (Yolene) Hairgrove; Rev. Justin (Stephanie) Tanner; Jinger Tanner; and Juli (David) Martinez. Her greatest joy was hearing the laughter of her great-grandchildren: Kendra, Alexis, Natalie Maher; Sarah Beth and Rebecca Hairgrove; William and Jacob Hairgrove; and Caden Hairgrove. They were the light of her life. She will be remembered lovingly by her surviving sister, Pat Brune, and numerous nieces, nephews, and friends. Velma loved the Lord and served His Kingdom as the church secretary for over 25 years. She was a mighty prayer warrior and spent time talking to Him every night before bed. She was involved in various clubs and organizations in Cleveland, Texas. Family gatherings were made tastier with her beautiful coconut pies and chocolate cake, as well as many other “Nannie Classics.” Her Christmas Tree Cookies made the holiday official. When she wasn’t cooking, you would surely find her reading while surrounded by her poodles: Taffy, Brandy, and Candy. During her lifetime, she chewed her way through countless cases of bubblegum.She will be greatly missed by all who loved her. Nannie will be remembered each time we enjoy her favorites: grapes and cheese, popcorn, and fresh watermelon. Funeral services will be held Thursday, April 21, 2011, 11:00 a.m. at Pace-Stancil Chapel, Cleveland, Texas with interment following at Cleveland Memorial Cemetery.
