Terry Wayne Haltom finished his race on April 29th, 2024. While he was never the loudest in the room, he was always the first to listen and the one others tended to listen to. He was a man of few words, but when he spoke, he was heard. Incredibly intelligent and unbelievably wise, he had one of the biggest hearts and loved unconditionally. He could always find the good in people and always sought to live a life worthy of his Christian walk.
He was born on January 23, 1944 to Jewel Ramon and Lubye Lee Haltom. The youngest of seven children and the only one to be born in a hospital, “Butch” quickly became the baby of the family, a role that his siblings never let him outgrow or forget. Raised in Dolen, Texas, he attended the little one room Dolen school until it was consolidated with Tarkington, where he graduated in 1963.
Butch attended college in Colorado before joining the US Army. In 1967, he met the love of his life, a Baltimore yankee named Donna Harris. They married soon after on a Friday the 13th and embarked on a series of adventures. For 56 years they laughed and loved together, raising three children in Dolen, just a stone’s throw from the homestead where he himself grew up.
His love of family was only eclipsed by his love for his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. Butch was a faithful founding member of Unity Baptist Church in Dolen for forty years. His faith in Jesus never faltered, even in the face of extreme loss and adversity at times throughout his life.
In 1968, he went to work for Anheuser Busch, working his way from the bottling floor to the quality assurance lab, before retiring in 2005. He was a member of Tarkington Prairie Masonic Lodge #498 for almost 60 years, where he was a Past Master and recipient of the Golden Trowel. He continued his Masonic service as a member of the Houston Scottish Rite, reaching the 32nd Degree and Knights Commander of the Court of Honor.
He left this world peacefully, with his wife’s hand in his and his children at his feet. Surely, he was greeted at the gates of Heaven by his beautiful daughter Teri. Also preceding him in death were his parents, Jewel and Lubye Haltom, brothers Jewel “Cowboy” Haltom Jr., Jim Haltom, and Bob Haltom, and sisters Doris Wells and Dorothy Hall. Left to cherish his legacy are his wife and soulmate Donna Haltom, daughter Honore Bailey and husband Marty, son Donny Haltom and wife Heather, and his big sister Yvonne “Sis” Griffin. He leaves grandchildren; Ayden Burt, Kip Haltom Bailey, Jase Bailey, Dylan Haltom, Lucas Haltom, Lance Haltom, Jewel Leia Haltom and honorary granddaughter Jessica Whitmire; and two great grandchildren, Braelyn Powell and Drake Haltom, who were his pride and joy; and scores of cousins, nieces, nephews, friends, acquaintances, in-laws and outlaws….. but to the best of our knowledge, no foes.
Visitation will be held at Pace Stancil Funeral Home on Friday May 3rd from 6-8pm. Funeral Service will be at 10:00 the following Saturday morning, May 4th at Unity Baptist Church, 8904 FM 787 in Dolen, Texas. Burial will follow at the Haltom Family Cemetery in Dolen. The family asks that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to Unity Baptist Church, Dolen, TX.
