Silas William Nelson, 100, of Dayton died Thursday, December 22, 2011 at home. He was born April 27, 1911 in Stilson, Texas, the seventh of 10 children of Swedish immigrants, Carl and Anna Seaberg Nelson. Mr. Nelson was a lifelong resident of Dayton where he was a member of First United Methodist Church. After finishing the eighth grade, he began working on the family’s farm where he picked up skills as a machinery operator. He turned his heavy equipment skills into a lifelong career. Mr. Nelson was a dragline operator and dozer operator building canals for Dayton area farmers. He lived by honor and truth through God’s love serving as an example for all those who knew him.
Service for Mr. Nelson will be 10:00 a.m., Saturday, December 24, 2011 at First United Methodist Church under the direction of Pace-Stancil Funeral Home, Dayton. The family will receive friends Friday evening, 5:00 to 7:00 p.m., at the funeral home.
Mr. Nelson was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers, five sisters and his wife of 45 years: Thelma Addington Nelson. He is survived by his daughters, Sylvia Ramsey of Dayton, and Glenna Sue Floyd and husband Jim of Houston; his sons: Ron Nelson and wife Julia of Cleveland and Don Nelson and wife Virginia of Dayton; brother: James Nelson of Dayton; eleven grandchildren; twenty six great-grandchildren and three great great-grandchildren; also numerous other relatives and a host of friends.
