Sherman C. Cook

January 19, 1931 — March 13, 2016

Sherman Charles Cook, 85, went to be with the Lord and reunite with his beloved wife Lora of almost 60 years on March 13, 2016. Originally born in Anson, Texas, but spent most of his life in Houston, Texas. After graduating from Aldine High School, Sherman served his country as a drill sergeant in the U.S. Marines. He came back to Texas and became an electrician and was employed with Fisk Electric, in the 70’s after many years with Fisk he was promoted to a superintendent and was in charge of most of the high rises in our downtown Houston skyline. In the 90’s Fisk transferred Sherman to Las Vegas to oversee what was going to be the largest hotel casino in the United States, the MGM Grand, after completing, the MGM Grand, Fisk transferred him to Reno, Nevada to oversee the Circus Circus casino, Sherman finally retired after completing the Circus Circus casino. He retired with the love of his life Lora in Coldsprings, Texas. They enjoyed entertaining family and friends in their lake house on Lake Livingston. They traveled the United States twice over in their 5th wheel. Traveled abroad on cruises to Italy, Spain, Portugal, Haiti and throughout the Caribbean, and enjoyed the beauty of Hawaii. He lived for deer season every year and hunted with the same group of men for over 50 years, Lester Mechell, Martin “Dodie” Majefski, Bonner Young, Arnold Foster and David Krupa. All of these men and their families were like extended family to Sherman. Sherman is preceded in death by his parents, Robert and Jewell Cook, one brother Robert Cook and his wife Lora Cook. Sherman is survived by his sister Barbara Cook, daughter Sherry Gholston and husband Ron Gholston, grandsons Matthew Ballard and wife Devan, Michael “M.J.” Wilhite, Mitchel Sherman Wilhite and wife Elisabeth, granddaughter Micaleh Lantrip and husband Brandon Lantrip, great grandchildren Brayden Ballard, Brailey Ballard and Derek Wilhite.
Visitation will be held from 1 p.m. – 2 p.m., Thursday, March 17, 2016 at First Baptist Church, Coldspring, Texas
Funeral services will be held immediately after visitation at 2 p.m.
