Obituary for Roxie Elizabeth Vandver
Roxie Elizabeth Vandver, 63, passed away on January 6, 2025, in Cleveland, Texas, after a courageous battle with liver cancer. Born on August 27, 1961, in Ogden, Utah, to Clovis Brewer and Nettie Beatrice Green, Roxie spent the last 25 years of her life in Tarkington, Texas, where she was a beloved member of her community.
Roxie was known for her strength, resilience, and independent spirit. She worked for 18 years at Simmons Grocery, where she became a familiar and cherished face. She was a woman of adventure, always eager for new experiences, whether that meant setting off on a cruise, taking a spontaneous trip with friends, or enjoying a night of gambling. Roxie had a passion for travel and never liked staying home for too long. Saturday nights were often spent surrounded by family, playing cards, and enjoying each other's company—a tradition that brought her great joy.
Despite spending many years battling cancer, Roxie remained determined to live life to the fullest. She made it a priority to complete her bucket list, checking off nearly every item, always with the same grit and determination that defined her life.
Roxie is preceded in death by her parents, Clovis Brewer and Nettie Beatrice Green; her son, Shannon Brewer; and her brothers, Josh Brewer and Calvin Brewer. She is survived by her loving husband, James Vandver; son, Justin Willaby; daughter, Jimmie Carol Balinski and husband Victor; brother, John Brewer; sister, Susie Williams and husband Nelson; grandchildren, Elizabeth Hafer and husband Wes, Dewayne Bowen and wife Alex, Devin Bowen, Levi Williams, Aaryn Williams, Taylor Dawn, Luke, Jonah, and Julie; great-grandchildren, Roman, Alexis, and Grayson; along with numerous nieces, nephews, and extended family members and friends who will miss her dearly.
A memorial service to celebrate Roxie’s life will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, January 12, 2025, at Pace Stancil Funeral Home in Dayton.
