Robert Earl Brumley died on July 21,2018, following a lengthy illness with Parkinson’s disease. He was born September 8, 1932, in Mansfield Louisiana to Christopher Lee Brumley and Martha Viola Self Brumley. Bob was a member of First Baptist Church of Coldspring since 1970, where he served as a deacon. He strived to put faith, family and service first in his life.
He served six years in the Texas Air National Guard as a radio operator, spending one year at Kessler Air Force Base in Mississippi learning Morse code. From 1949 to 1955 he worked for Southern Pacific Railroad, four years in an apprentice program and two years as a car inspector. In August, 1955, he joined the Houston Police Department, attending the police academy. He served two years in radio patrol and 19 years in the juvenile division, investigating crimes against juveniles. Bob retired from the Houston Police Department August, 1974, and started working for the San Jacinto Water Supply the next day as manager/operator until March 18, 1983, when he was appointed as sheriff of San Jacinto County by San Jacinto County Commissioner’s Court. He served as sheriff until August, 1988.
Bob was active in his community, serving as mayor/alderman for 17 years for the City of Coldspring. He served several terms on the board of the San Jacinto County Senior Citizens. He enjoyed art in all mediums and especially creating beautiful pieces of metal art, and refurbishing antiques. He enjoyed sitting at the swings by the pond with family and friends.
In addition to his parents, Bob was preceded in death by his daughter Cynthia Beth Padgett, granddaughter Hope Rene Padgett, daughter-in-law Cathy Diane Brumley, sister Martha Ann Legg, brother-in-law Glenn Legg, brothers Leon, Ed and Ray Brumley, brothers-in-law Virgil William Swan and James Edward Swan, sister-in-law Jennie Vee Brumley.
He is survived by his wife of 66 years Sarah Elizabeth Swan Brumley, son Ronald Earl Brumley, daughter Una Elizabeth Mayfield and husband Pat Mayfield, son-in-law G.M. “Bo” Padgett, sisters-in law Sharon Swan, Martha Charrey, Carolyn Swan, Pauline Brumley and Becky Baker, granddaughters Beth Ann Ludden (Jon), Patricia Elizabeth Owens (Keith), Terri Elizabeth Camden (Charles), Sarah Ellen Padgett (fiancé Johnny Garza), grandsons James Landon Padgett, Robert Wayne Mayfield (Jennifer), Ryan Earl Brumley (Sammie Jo), Russell Charles Brumley (Ashleigh).
Bob loved and enjoyed 16 great-grandchildren and his beloved nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday, July 25, 2018, at First Baptist Church, Coldspring, Texas. Memorial Service will follow at 2 p.m. Interment will follow at Hayman Cemetery, FM 2025, Coldspring, Texas.
