Nadine Mildred Wootton, age 97 of Houston, Texas, passed away Sunday, April 24, 2016. She was born September 10, 1918 in Liberty County to parents Edward and Lera DeSpain who preceded her in death along with her husband, Louie Wootton; sisters, Gracie, Gladys, Tony, Maggie and Lucy; and brothers, Warren, Jesse and Quannah.
Survivors include her daughters, Frances Simon, Snell and Kathryn Smith, Wootton; sons, Jesse “Gene” Eugene Snell, Roland Curtis Snell and Wayne Wootton; grandchildren, Gena, Marie, Harold, Jr., Emily, Patty, Tammi, Kathy, Carla, Randy, Shawn, Shawndra, Jill, Neil, Wendy and Chad; thirty-four great-grandchildren, thirty-three great great-grandchildren, numerous nieces and nephews.
Nadine Wootton was the last of nine children of Edward and Lera DeSpain. She went by two nick names. Her mother called her Dennie. Her sisters and brothers as well as her nieces and nephews called her Spud!
She graduated from Dolen High School and was a housewife most of her life. With five children to raise she had plenty to do at home. She was married to E.B. Snell and had three children, Gene, Frances and Roland Snell. They divorced and she remarried Louie Wootton and had two more children, Kathryn and Wayne Wootton. Louie was sick for a number of years with heart trouble and emphysema, Nadine took care of him until he died in 1964.
She loved to fish in her early years. She and Louie would meet her brother Warren DeSpain and his wife Katy Belle at the beach and camp out for days and fish! They would just have the best time! She also liked to go squirrel hunting and would go by herself many times. She liked to go deer hunting with her brother Warren and nephew Warrnie. She loved to visit with her brother Warren and his wife Katy Belle. She loved to talk more than anything “that’s a family thing”!
Her sister-in-law Sarah would pick her up and they would run the roads. Sarah would take her to visit family she had not seen in years or just go out and eat. She lived in Nederland, Texas for a while where she spent a lot of time with her youngest sister Lucy. She and Lucy could spend hours telling jokes one after another. She loved the time she spent with Lucy, before she died of cancer. She lived with her daughter Kathryn for about 14 years, until Kathryn was no longer able to take care of her. She then moved to Houston and lived in a nursing home, where her daughter Frances took care of her and her needs until her death.
Visitation will be held from 11:00 a.m. - 12:00 noon, Thursday, April 28, 2016 at Pace Stancil Chapel, Cleveland, Texas. Services will follow starting at 12:00 noon, Thursday, April 28, 2016 at Pace Stancil Chapel, Cleveland, Texas. Interment will follow at Oak Shade Cemetery, Cleveland, Texas.
