Marvin Wayne Butcher February 15, 1931 – July 30, 2015 On July 30, 2015 Marvin Wayne Butcher was called to Heaven after valiantly fighting cancer. He was at home surrounded by family and friends, and was truly loved by all. Marvin was born on February 15, 1931 in Garnett, Kansas. He loved telling stories about his childhood, which was full of adventures. From shooting BB guns with Johnny Marmon, to catching crawfish, hunting and fishing on the bluff, catching rabbits in the snow, and visiting in George Spindler’s grocery store. In high school he played football and basketball, enjoyed singing in a quartet around town, shooting pool in the pool hall, and he experienced perils of owning or co-owning old vehicles with Gene and Norman. After graduating from Garnett High School in 1949, he enlisted in the Navy. His days in the Navy, and the friends he made on the USS Pine Island and the USS Point Cruz, were some of the finest days of his life. They helped to shape him into the amazing man he was. Patriotism and the love of his country defined his way of life. He was part of an experience on the USS Point Cruz whereby the ship adopted a baby from an orphanage where he wasn’t being cared for. After much red tape such as getting a Visa, Passport, etc, he was allowed on board, and was off to America where he was adopted by a doctor from the medical ship. The sailors made many things for the baby, including a baby carriage which had been used as a bomb carriage. The shipmates have reunions every year, and although the baby is in his fifties, he attends the reunions and expresses appreciation to the sailors for saving his life. After the Navy, where he obtained an EN2 rating, he attended Pittsburgh Kansas State University. He graduated in 1957 where he earned a BS degree in accounting. He had many interest in gardening, bowling, wood work, traveling, singing in the church choirs for many years and attending grandchildren’s sporting events. Marvin is preceded in death by his parents, Jack and Helen Thompson Butcher, sisters Jeanne Haines and Betty Wells, as well as his beloved dogs Missy and Penny. He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Jean Stockton Butcher, son Randy Everitt, and daughter Becky Sanders. 5 grandchildren Ashley Dixon, Melissa Everitt, Jill Sierra, Chad Sanders, and Kelly Sanders. 10 great grandchildren Justin, Jordyn, Brody, Natalie Jean, Nina, Alana, Alize, Louis Jr, Jayden, and Nolan. As well as numerous family and friends. A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m., Thursday, August 6, 2015 at Clear Lake United Methodist Church, 16335 El Camino Real Houston, Texas, 77062. A graveside service will be held at 10:00 a.m., Friday, August 14, 2015 at Montague Cemetery, Cleveland, Texas.
