Kathleen May Purswell, 88, passed away quietly on June 12, 2016, in Conroe. A devoted mother, grandmother and friend, she will be long remembered for her generosity and love of life.
She is survived by her sister Helen Cole of Stillwater, Oklahoma; her children Janice (Dock) Dunn of Conroe, Bill (Stella) Purswell of Tyler, and Mike (Laura) Purswell of Nashville, Tennessee; by her grandchildren Eric (Lisa) Dunn, Kimberly (Jeff) Minn, Mark (Kasey) Dunn, Kirk (Laura) Purswell, Matt Purswell, and Katherine Purswell; by seven great-grandchildren; and by numerous nieces and nephews.
She is preceded in death by her husband J.D. “Dook” Purswell; her brother Gene Pollard; and her sisters Geneva Belle Curtis and Laura Lee McBee.
Born September 9, 1927, in Vici, Oklahoma, Mrs. Purswell moved to Tarkington Prairie as a teenager and lived the rest of her life in the area. She married her husband Dook Purswell in 1944 and enjoyed 44 years of marriage to him, until his death in 1988. They lived for most of their life together in Conroe, where he was employed by Exxon in the Conroe oil fields. Upon his retirement, they lived for a number of years in Tarkington Prairie; she remained a member of the Rural Shade Baptist Church there until her death.
A busy homemaker and mother, she also worked for a number of years as a Teacher’s Aide at Conroe High School. Generations of friends and a host of relatives benefited from her talents as a cook and a talented seamstress; they knew they would always find a warm welcome, a willing listener, and usually a cup of coffee and a slice of her legendary pie. For her children and grandchildren, she was a source of quiet strength and unwavering love. She will be sorely missed and lovingly remembered.
Visitation will be held from 3:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m., Tuesday, June 14, 2016 at Pace Stancil Chapel, Cleveland, Texas. Services will begin starting at 4:00 p.m., Tuesday, June 14, 2016 at Pace Stancil Chapel, Cleveland, Texas. Interment will follow at Boothe Cemetery, Cleveland, Texas.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her name to St. Jude Children’s Hospital, 501 St Jude Place Memphis, TN 38105.
