Joseph Nelson Waldrop, 62, of Dayton passed away on Easter Sunday, March 31, 2013 in Houston, Texas. He was born January 2, 1951 in Houston, Texas to parents, Sidney Nelson Waldrop and Evelyn June Holbrook Waldrop. He grew up in Liberty, graduated from Liberty High School in 1970, and attended Sam Houston State University. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Liberty and the American Rice Growers of Dayton and Raywood. Joe was co-owner of Waldrop Brothers Farms. His passion for farming started at a young age and he had is first crop of soybeans in 1968 with his cousin Aaron Holbrook. He had farmed various crops over the last 40 plus years of rice, soybeans, grain sorghum, corn, and hay. When he was a little boy he had trouble keeping his grandpa Holbrook straight, as he was always loaning out Joe’s horse to various trail rides and Joe thought they would ruin his horse. Joe had a great knowledge of Liberty County genealogy. Whenever anyone needed to know a relation they would always call Joe. He also had his private pilot license at a young age and flew his grandfather’s plane. Joe had a love for old western swing music and enjoyed being with his family and friends. Service for Joe will be 2:00 p.m., Thursday, April 4, 2013 at the First United Methodist Church, Liberty. Interment will follow at Cooke Cemetery, Liberty under the direction of Pace-Stancil Funeral Home, Dayton. Joe was preceded in death by his father, Nelson Waldrop; his grandparents, Leonard Lee and Beulah Waldrop and A.C. and Ellen Holbrook.
