Louis John “Big John” Ulkie passed away peacefully Sunday evening, April 25, 2010 surrounded by his family. He was born September 30, 1941 in Liberty, Texas to parents: Louis John and Sadie Gregory Ulkie. John was a lifelong resident of Dayton where he attended Dayton schools graduating in 1960. He was a loyal member of St. Joseph the Worker Catholic Church, a butcher for 35 years, & a mechanic for DISD. He was always very involved in the Dayton FFA and made great sausage. A true outdoorsman, he enjoyed gardening, hunting, fishing, and his cattle. Services for John will be 3:00 p.m., Wednesday, April 28, 2010 at St. Joseph the Worker Catholic Church in Dayton with Father Jim McClintock officiating. Interment will follow at Magnolia Park Cemetery under the direction of Pace-Stancil Funeral Home. Visitation will be 5:00 to 9:00 p.m., Tuesday evening at the funeral home with rosary at 7:00 p.m. John was preceded in death by his parents, sisters: Linda White and Dorothy Graves; brother: James Ulkie and nephew: Will Graves. He is survived by his wife of 46 years: Shirley Murphy Ulkie of Dayton; his daughter: Suzeanne Ulkie-Havard of Dayton; grandson: Kordale Havard, granddaughter: Hope Havard; brother: Archie Ulkie and wife Patsy of Dayton; also numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and a host of friends.
