Jimmie Dee Conner, age 80 of Cleveland, Texas, passed away Wednesday, February 24, 2016. She was born December 5, 1935 in Killeen, Texas to parents Willie Estelle Hopson and Laverne Elmore who preceded her in death along with her husband, Bobby Conner.
Born with cerebral palsy, Jimmie Dee never allowed this disability to hamper her. In fact, she decided to use this to fuel her passion to achieve. And achieve, she did. Jimmie Dee graduated in 1954 from Aldine High School, where she participated in many activities and received many honors. These included National Honor Society, Most Popular Senior Girl, editor of the school newspaper and Miss Future Homemakers of America.
She loved to read and write and found these to be a major part of her life. Attending Memorial Baptist Church in Houston was an important part of her teenage life and where she later met her future husband, Bobby John Conner. They were married 53 years before he passed away just over five years ago. The Conner family, including children Mark Edward and Bobbi Dee, moved to Magnolia Community in 1966.
Together, Bobby and Jimmie Dee dedicated their lives to serving God, family and others. This was evidenced by their home always being an “open door” to everyone. Jimmie always said her greatest joy was having all her kids under one roof. She must have been ecstatic as her final days were spent at home hearing the sounds of up to 35 family members –spanning four generations –eating, reminiscing and playing games.
The Conner Family attended Magnolia Baptist Church. During over 40 years of service there, Jimmie Dee was involved in just about everything, including teaching a women’s Sunday School class and being church treasurer. In her latter years, she could always be found with a can of Diet Coke with a flexible straw. Her favorite expression was “it’s going to be a good day, because God made it.”
Survivors include her daughter, Bobbi Dee Anderson; son, Mark Edward Conner and wife Susan; sisters, Jo Burk, Jackie Stark and Jerry Roberts; grandchildren, DeAnn Tucker, David Earl Anderson and Katie Conner; great-grandchildren, Averi Tucker, Hayden Anderson, Kynlee Tucker and Addison Anderson; she is also survived by Brenda Sherman, Debbie Scott and David Anderson, Jr.; numerous nieces, nephews and family members.
