Janice M. Hughes Jackson, 64, of Dayton, lost her long battle with cancer on Tuesday, June 15, 2010, at her residence. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Friday, June 18, 2010, at the First Baptist Church of Dayton with burial following at the Magnolia Park Cemetery in Dayton. Visitation will be held on Friday, from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m., at the church. Services are under the direction of Pace-Stancil Funeral Home in Dayton. Janice was born August 14, 1945 in Houston, to parents; Otha Vard Hughes and Velma Mae Poteete. She was a former resident of Houston, and has resided in the Dayton area for the past 34 years. She enjoyed life as a homemaker and former cashier for the Dayton I.S.D., was a member of the First Baptist Church and the church bereavement committee, a devoted mother and grandmother. She also enjoyed her church, the computer, crafts, fishing, cooking, gardening, birds, and will be remembered for doing anything she put her mind to, and treasuring her close relationships with neighbors and friends. Mrs. Jackson was preceded in death by her father: Otha Vard Hughes, mother: Velma Mae Poteete Bradley, and brother: Charles Evans Hughes and wife Beverly. She is survived by her husband of 45 years: Joe Jackson of Dayton, daughters: Melinda K. “Mindy” Jackson of League City and Tracy M. Jackson of Dayton, son: Jeffrey P. “Jeff” Jackson and wife Dawn of Dayton, another son: Mark Smith and wife Esmeralda Houston, sister: Darlene Krafka of Houston, brothers: William “ Bill” Hughes and wife Ela of Houston and Gary Hughes and friend Mona of Houston, brother-in-law: Edward “Butch” Jackson and wife Pat of Galveston, grandchildren: Raegan M. Jackson, Christina Mae Carlson, and Matthew Smith, great-grandchild: Eric J. Carlson, III, and numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives., and friends.
