Obituary for Jack Martin Downey, Jr.
Jack Martin Downey, Jr., 85, of Dayton, Texas, passed away peacefully on October 28, 2024. Born on September 9, 1939, in Pasadena, Texas, Jack was the beloved son of Jack Martin Downey, Sr. and Bertha Mae Downey. He spent the last 15 years in Dayton, Texas, but his roots ran deep in Channelview, where he lived for many years.
Jack was a talented machinist, known for his remarkable mechanical skills. He had an innate ability to repair just about anything, and his family and friends often relied on him for help with their projects. His generous spirit extended beyond his tradesmanship; he was an active member of Kenefick Baptist Church, where he found joy in fellowship and worship.
A passionate fisherman and an enthusiastic sports fan, Jack loved nothing more than spending a Saturday watching the Houston Astros or the Dallas Cowboys. Friends often chuckled at the sight of him watching one game on television while holding a radio to his ear to catch the play-by-play of another.
Jack had a special fondness for grandfather clocks, frequently working on and restoring them. His playful personality shone through in his love for telling jokes, bringing laughter and warmth to all who knew him.
He is survived by his loving wife of over 64 years, Rheba Nell Downey; daughter Lisa Cox and husband Eddy; son Steven Downey; brother Gary Downey and wife Lynn; sister Mary Josey; and grandchildren Corey Cox and wife Sarah, Casey Cox and Chase Cox; great-grandchildren, Addilee, Emberly, Elizabeth, and Landon. Jack was preceded in death by his parents.
A visitation will be held on Friday, November 1, 2024, at Pace Stancil Funeral Home from 11:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., followed by a service at 12:00 p.m. A burial will take place at San Jacinto Memorial Park, 14659 East Fwy, Houston, Texas.
Jack will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him. His legacy of kindness, laughter, and unwavering love for his family will forever remain in our hearts.
