Harry Chance

January 7, 1937 — August 7, 2015

Harry Crawford Chance passed to his eternal rest on August 7, 2015. He was with his friends at Magnolia Place Healthcare Center in Liberty, Texas. Harry was born on January 7, 1937 in Donaldsville, Seminole County, Georgia to Harry Dolphus Chance and Virdie Lena Averitt. At age 4, the Chance family moved to Columbia, Alabama, and then to Auburndale Florida, where Harry completed grade school and graduated from Auburndale High School. After graduation, Harry got a job selling cleaning supplies and he was able to travel. In the early 1970's Harry moved to Liberty, Texas. Harry was employed by Liberty ISD and served as a custodian at Sam Houston Elementary School for as long as he was able. Many Liberty residents will recall seeing Harry ride his tri-cycle or electric scooter around town; he never let his physical, financial, or mental limitations hold him back. Harry never met a stranger and cultivated friendships. He was generous with his time and energy and always wanted to be a part of any activities at First Baptist Church of Liberty, the Liberty Lion's Club, and the Liberty Opry. He was a faithful volunteer at Lions Club fundraisers and program sales at Liberty Panther football games. Harry's needs for assistance blessed many friends with an opportunity for service. Harry knew when he needed help and was never too proud to ask. In doing so, he helped others build friendships that spanned generations, denominations, and social status. Harry is survived by his older brother, William Thomas Chance of North Carolina and two half-brothers, James Kenneth Clemmons of Chicago, Illinois and Donald Wayne Clemmons, of Winter Haven, Florida. Harry's special friends in Liberty County are vast and include the families of Dr. Nylds and Mary Hinch, Wesley and Kimber Hinch, Karmen and Russell McGee, Karen and David Adams, John Hebert, R.B. and Mary McDonald, the Liberty Lions Club and the members of First Baptist Church of Liberty. Special thanks go out to Harry's friends and caregivers of Magnolia Place Healthcare in Liberty. Services for Harry Crawford Chance will be held at First Baptist Church of Liberty, Texas on Friday, August 14, 2015 with visitation at 9:00 A.M. and a service at 10:00 A.M.
