Harold W. Savage, of Dayton, Texas, was born May 4, 1923 in Arkansas and died on Wednesday, June 16, 2010 at the age of 87 years. A WWII veteran, he served from January 1943 through January 1946 as a Navy combat medic with the ground forces on Saipan and Okinawa in the South Pacific. After the war, he attended The University of Texas at Austin where he met Belva Ball. Two years later they married. Harold worked as a railway mail clerk out of Houston before moving to Dayton in 1955. He continued to work at the Dayton Post Office until the early 1970s and then opened an air conditioning and appliance repair shop. He retired to restore his 1893 Victorian home in Dayton. Harold was a member of the First United Methodist Church, Dayton and the Lions Club. In 1959, he served as Commander of American Legion Post 512, Dayton. A charter member of the Dayton Chamber of Commerce and the Dayton Community Development Corporation Board, Harold served for several years on both the Dayton Community Development Corporation Board and the Dayton Housing Authority Board. Harold is survived by his wife of 60 years, Belva B. Savage of Dayton, and their three children and spouses, Lea Ellen and Lee Burch of Dayton, Bill and Donna Savage of Colorado Springs, Colorado, and Becky and Brad Burditt of Dayton. Grandchildren, Daniel Burch, Blake and Claire (Burch) Stiles, Phillip Burch, Emily Savage, Jake Savage, Ashley Burditt, and Tyler Burditt and great-granddaughter Zoey also survive him. Additionally, Harold’s sister and brother-in-law, June and Howard Reeves of Kingwood, Texas, and several nieces and nephews survive him. His parents, James Chester and Martha Ellen (Harber) Savage, and brothers, Jim Savage and Merrell Savage, predeceased Harold. The family extends a special word of appreciation to the doctors, nurses, and staff of the Liberty Health Care Center. In lieu of flowers, donations may be mailed to the American Legion 512 Building Fund at PO Box 464, Dayton, Texas 77535 or to the charity of your choice. Visitation: Friday, June 18, 2010 from 5-9 pm at Pace-Stancil Funeral Home, Dayton. Memorial services: First United Methodist Church of Dayton on Saturday, June 19, 2010, 2 pm, with interment following at Magnolia Park, Dayton.
