George Winfred Owens

Obituary for George Winfred Owens George Winfred Owens, a beloved father, grandfather, and friend, passed away peacefully on September 6, 2024, in Mont Belvieu, Texas. He was 74 years old.

Born on October 12, 1949, in Baytown, Texas, George was the son of G.W. Owens and Winnie Wenola Odom Owens. He grew up on “The Hill” in Barbers Hill and was a proud 1968 graduate of Barbers Hill High School. A dedicated construction supervisor by profession, George was known for his commitment to his work and his easy-going nature.

George’s life was enriched by his passions. He found joy in fishing, classic cars, and following NASCAR races, which he enjoyed on every Sunday. An avid YouTube enthusiast, he was particularly fascinated by videos of bamboo huts being built in his later life. George also had a deep appreciation for good food, particularly chicken fried steak, fish, and his beloved coffee. His love for playing dominoes and cards was a cherished tradition, often enjoyed in the company of family and friends.

A man of many stories, George relished long conversations and reminiscing, especially around a kitchen table or campfire. He had a playful spirit in his youth, often engaging in slap boxing with his brothers, a classic example of sibling camaraderie. He never really grew out of that playful spirit!

George is preceded in death by his parents, his wife Jeanie Threlkeld Owens, his son Dustin Owens, his brother Gene Owens, his step-son Bo Threlkeld, and his brother-in-law Doug Wilks. He leaves behind a legacy of love and memories through his children: Cindy Bragg and her husband Bobby, Audra Jean Lozano and her husband Raymond, Sean Owens, and Chad Owens and his wife Kay. He is also survived by his step-daughters Joann Fisher and her husband Greg, and Ryan Kay Urech. His siblings include Glen Owens and his wife Marlaina, Steve Owens and his wife Denise, Glenda Albus and her husband Stretch, and Gena Wilks. George's memory will also live on through his grandchildren Mandy, Rudy, Amber, Robby, Taylor, Heather, Mitchell, Paige, Katie, Dustin, Cheyenne, Tara, Melody, Kaitlyn, Grayson, Riley Kate, Amelia, William, and numerous great-grandchildren, as well as other family and many friends.

George also leaves behind his best friend and loving ex-wife Erin Dunlap Almon that he shared the last years of his life with her by his side, watching bamboo huts, the news, playing cards and having coffee. She was an amazing part of his life that he cherished everyday.

A visitation will be held in George’s honor on Monday, September 9, 2024, from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. at Pace Stancil Funeral Home in Dayton. A service celebrating his life will follow on Tuesday, September 10, 2024, at 10:00 a.m., also at Pace Stancil Funeral Home. Burial will take place at Magnolia Park Cemetery.

George Winfred Owens will be dearly missed by all who knew him. His warmth, stories, and laughter will remain in the hearts of his loved ones forever.
