Ethel Marie McClanahan Ellington was born in Yoakum Texas on May 6, 1914 and left this life to be with the Lord May 31, 2015. After Ethel married Novel Calvin Ellington, they made their home on Tarkington Prairie. Ethel and Novel adopted their surviving sons when the boys were young teenagers. Ethel’s work ethic began early in life working beside her father and siblings in the family cotton fields while also working in the home to help her mother care for their family . As an adult she worked at Rhoden’s grocery store, taught school at Tarkington ISD and also served as the assessor/collector at TISD. After retiring there, she worked at Walmart in the fabric department to the age of 84. Ethel was an avid gardener and homemaker and was a faithful member of Oak Shade Baptist Church where she taught Sunday School for a number of years. Ethel was preceded in death by parents Joseph Collier McClanahan and Fannie Olga Pearce McClanahan; husband, Novel Ellington; brothers John, Billy, Doug and Mac McClanahan and sister Cleo Lee; niece Molly Tippit; and granddaughter Karen Ann Ellington. Mrs. Ellington is survived by sons George W. Ellington, wife Becky; Albert L. “Pete †Ellington, wife Mary; and Joseph M. Ellington, wife Jane; her beloved neighbors David and Sheila Tackett , many nieces and nephews, grandchildren and great grandchildren. The family has asked that gifts or donations be made to the Oak Shade Baptist Church.
