Dalton Ray Self

Dalton Ray Self, age 77 of Shepherd, Texas, passed away Saturday, October 14, 2017. He was born February 9, 1940 in Houston, Texas to parents Percy and Hazel Self. He is preceded in death by his grandson, Joey Ray Dean; and son-in-law, Michael Wayne Bryan.

He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Lois Self of Shepherd, Texas; daughter, Betty Ilene Self of Shepherd, Texas; granddaughter, Jeanette Rae Self of Shepherd, Texas; great-grandchildren, Cody, Meghan and Kaitlyn Self of Shepherd, Texas, and Travis Ray Dean of Baytown, Texas; great-great-grandson, Memphis Ray Self; very special friends, Henry Preston and Mike Voan.

Dalton, also known as Sonny to his friends and family, worked 50 years for the HB&T, Union Pacific Railroads as a Switchman. He served in the U.S. Air Force and that is where he met and married his wife, Lois, 59 years ago. They lived in the Cypress area until moving to Shepherd over 35 years ago. While living in Cypress he obtained his pilot’s license and was the proud owner of a little Cessna. It was while he was living in Cypress that Henry Preston invited him to church and not long afterwards he received the Holy Ghost. He was an active member of the Shepherd United Pentecostal Church for over 47 years. In the 70’s Sonny attended Texas Bible College. He was loved by many and will be dearly missed. He was a wonderful, loving husband, and devoted dad and grandfather, simply known to all of us as “Dad.”

Visitation will be held from 5:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m., Wednesday, October 18, 2017 at Pace Stancil Funeral Home, Cleveland, Texas. Services will be held at 2:00 p.m., Thursday, October 19, 2017 at Pace Stancil Chapel, Cleveland, Texas. Interment will follow at Farley Chapel Cemetery, Shepherd, Texas.
