Curtis Eugene Pennington, 91, of Anahuac, Texas, passed away peacefully on February 17, 2025, in Baytown, Texas.
Born on July 25, 1933, in Pelly, Texas, Curtis “Gene” was the son of Curtis Austin Pennington and Margaret Elizabeth Oates. A proud veteran of the United States Army, he served during the Korean War. Throughout his life, Curtis “Gene” remained deeply committed to his family and his community.
For 72 years, Curtis “Gene” was happily married to his beloved wife, Mary Pennington. The couple spent the last 60 years of their lives together in Anahuac, after years of living in Baytown. Curtis “Gene” was a devoted member of the Sweet Home Baptist Church in Hankamer, where his kind and gentle nature earned him the nickname “gentle giant” from those who knew him best.
Curtis “Gene” had a passion for the outdoors, particularly hunting and fishing. He cherished his time at his deer leases in Blanco and Normangee. One of his greatest joys was tending to his meticulously maintained 9-acre yard, which became a local landmark. He was proud to receive the “Yard of the Month” award numerous times, a testament to his love of gardening and landscaping.
Family was always at the heart of Curtis’ Gene’s” life. He treasured his time with his children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren, and these moments were among his most cherished. Curtis “Gene” is survived by his loving wife, Mary Pennington; daughters, Sheila Pennington Moor and her husband Halley Moor Sr., and Trella Pennington; brother Robert Pennington and wife Sandy; and his sister, Betty Pennington Coker. He also leaves behind a legacy of many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren, all of whom will remember him fondly.
He is preceded in death by his parents, his brother Butch Pennington, and his sister Peggy Pennington Foster.
At this time, no formal services are scheduled for Mr. Pennington, but his memory will live on in the hearts of his family, friends, and all who had the privilege of knowing him.
