Charles Proffer (Chuck), age 46, passed away Wednesday, January 23, 2013. He was born to Parents: Annette Proffer and Charles Proffer Sr. of Coldspring, Texas. God gave Charles and Annette a most wonderful gift with the birth of their son on July 26, 1966. Despite health problems, he prospered and grew into a happy child with all the blessings of a family that cared for him. His grandmother Irene became his caregiver which allowed his mom to continue to teach. At school age Chuck attended the school his mother taught at and used that connection to his advantage. Once a teacher asked him to pick up some litter and Chuck said, I don’t have to, my mother works here. We used that occasion to discuss proper respect and behavior. In 7th grade we moved to Coldspring. We built the house on the Lake ourselves and though young, Chuck pitched right in working side by side with his dad and me. We dedicated a year of weekends to the project, friends and relatives helped and eventually we moved in and Chuck started 7th grade that year. I also got a job in COCISD and so began our country life. Chuck became a country boy, dressing the part learning to hunt, fish and eventually bought an old Chevy truck which he worked on restoring. He joined the Outdoor Ed Class in High School, and with Mr. Slays enjoyed fishing trips and hunting trips to Ozona and one very special trip to Montana. Having become an outdoorsman of such, he joined his dad at their lease in the Junction-Kerrville area of West Texas. This is where he brought back his first deer of the many he was proud of killing. Charles was a squirrel hunter so Chuck took up squirrel hunting and after a little practice, both Chuck and his mom were able to bag a few. Fishing was done on the Lake and we did pretty good, learning how to chase the white bass and trot line for catfish. The fish fry celebrations that followed brought friends and neighbors from far and near. After graduation, Chuck began his College career, and I do mean career, because he loved school and learning. So supporting himself and attending college he finished his 4 years in 6 years, but was able to receive his bachelor’s degree in 1990. Life went on and he worked at several occupations, searching for a purpose in life and dealing with cancer that reoccurred in 1996. With the cancer in remission, Chuck went back to Sam Houston, and received his Master in Instructional Technology in 2009. Now he was qualified to work in the education field which he did at various schools, community colleges and service centers. In August of 2012 he applied and was hired by Hillsborough Community College in Tampa, Florida. He relocated there and was the happiest he had ever been with his job of Instructional Designer. But old demons resurfaced and he was not able to fight as hard as he needed to. The Lord took him from us and he is GONE TO SOON. Chuck is preceded in death by his father Charles Proffer Sr. He is survived by his mother Annette Proffer; other relatives include Steve and Jackie Kujawa of Houston, Texas, Kenneth and Peggy Kujawa of Cedar Park, Texas; Cousins Kevin, Laurie, Cari and Jonathan. Chuck had other 2nd cousins and many friends who stayed close by way of Facebook. Memorial services will be held Tuesday, January 29, 2013, 2:00 p.m. at First Baptist Church of Coldspring, Texas with Dr. Don M. Shannon presiding. Visitation will be held prior to the service starting at 1:00 p.m. at the church. Instead of Flowers, donations in honor of Chuck may be made to the Coldspring Senior Center, P.O. Box 145. Coldspring, TX 77331.
