Bowen Herbert Whittington, Jr.
Bowen Whittington, 85, of Liberty, Texas passed away Tuesday, August 29, 2017 after a brief struggle with cancer, at the home of his son and surrounded by his loving family.
Born on June 14, 1932 in Liberty, Texas, he was raised on the family rice farm in Devers. He was a lifelong resident of Liberty County with strong ties to Devers, Liberty and Dayton.
He was a loving and devoted husband, father to his three children, and grandfather to three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Bo found joy in music and played a mean harmonica. In later years, he performed with a band in Liberty. He also enjoyed gardening. Bo was involved with a number of area associations and was particularly proud of his membership with the Masonic Lodge of Liberty and the American Legion Hall in Dayton. Bo was an active member of the First United Methodist Church in Dayton.
Bo served in the Navy as a Radio Operator during the Korean War. He worked for the Texas Highway Department and was a manager at Campbell Ready Mix. He was a hard worker and took pride in taking care of his family.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Bowen and Letha Whittington, his sister, Peggy Powell, and his son, Milton Scott Whittington. Left behind to cherish his memory, his wife of 51 years, Irma Nell Whittington of Liberty; sisters, Joann Schwarze of Port Neches and Barbara Sue Rathke of Fredericksburg; son, Michael Whittington and wife Theresa of Dayton; daughter, Wendy Whittington and wife Suzanne of Alexandria, Virginia; three grandchildren, Bowen Shane Whittington of Dayton, Amy Brooke Whittington of Kingwood, and Harmony Linda Whittington of Dayton; and two great-grandchildren, Atticus and Noah Whittington.
Viewing will be Tuesday, September 5, 2017 from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Pace-Stancil Funeral Home in Dayton. The funeral service will be held on Wednesday, September 6, 2017 at 2:00 p.m. at the funeral home. He will be buried with his ancestors in the Whittington Family Cemetery in Devers.
